Professional Development: Blogging Makes Better Thinkers

Reasons to Write and Publish Every Day

When we have an unexpressed idea, it sits in our heads incomplete. We imagine we know it, and possibly even see it, but the test it when we have to explain it to another human being.

Writing every day makes us better thinkers. It moves us to take ideas from our minds and describe them with words. Publishing those words invites an audience to react and respond — we find out whether the message we sent is the one that they heard.

It’s a challenge to simply state the feelings, thoughts, and scope of an idea in precise and expressive ways. Unlike talking, which allows us to adjust and respond with tangents and corrections, writing and publishing come with an expectation that we’ll set out a thought clearly stated.

The commitment of words to written form draws that has an audience is a powerful incentive to think things through . . .

    Hi Liz

Writing, I need to do loads of that nowadays. Business letters, webmarketing pages, blog posts etc etc.
And it does help if you write everyday, but I have one little problem: double Dutch English which distracts me – in line and on line spell checkers are underlining every other word ;-) .

Since 1.5 week ago someone, Ed Rivis to be precise, pointed me toward the perfect solution for me: The Darkroom: http://they.misled.us/dark-room

A full black screen with a blinking cursor – just begging you to start writing. It doesn’t care if you miss spell or miss type, it just fills your black screen with green words – a very relaxing and rewarding sight!
Since using the Darkroom I ‘produce’ more text and am able to work without interrupting the flow.

FINALLY!! In one visit to Lis Strauss.com I have found the answers to the questions I have been asking for quite some time. “Why is it important Blog? Why should I do it? What will it accomplish?” Well, I believe I have my answers – and I appreciate it. I sort of feel “relieved”. I am no longer in the darkness of “no clue”! I have subscribed, ordered the book, and look forward to reading new thoughts in the future. Thanks again,

    Hi Karin!
That sounds perfect! You shouldn’t be interrupted by every word when you’re a thinker getting down thoughts. I’m all for waiting until the ideas are together and organized before worrying about what other folks see a spelling errors. :)

    Great to see you!

    Hi Penny,
I’m a patient one, but time is ticking and nothing has changed for a while. I’m not so much frustrated as tired of waiting and wishing I could fix it myself. :)

I’m about to write on that very subject now.

I think my biggest problem is I don’t have time to get them into complete blog posts if that makes sense?

What with a day job, my own business – the blogging comes last really! I’ve managed to do a bit with Twitter but even that’s not right for me!

What’s the solution to that? 101 drafts that never get published, or half baked blog posts with no meaning? Thoughts appreciated!

    Hi Keiron,
I’ve been traveling. I understand what you’re saying. My guess is that you’re making blogging something “other” than your job. Blog your experience. Use your blog to say what you hear yourself saying over and over. Then when you find yourself repeating that same thing, point your customers to the fuller explanation on your blog.

Email me or call if you want to talk.
