Sticky Is Showing Up

Show Up Whole and Human

The idea of community — people sharing stories and trading strategies — is at the core of any truly sticky brand. Community is about room and reciprocity. Everyone is there to give and so, everyone also receives.

For that reciprocity to catch and grow, someone has to go first. Someone has to “the one who . . . ”

  • is the person and personality behind the screen, so that folks can meet . . . the someone “real.”
  • provides the reality of a human who is present and listening, so that folks feel valued and cared about.
  • responds to the needs of visitors so that they know they are a vital part of the community.
  • gives without expectation, so that folks feel they might offer their wisdom as well.
  • helps without selling, so that folks know they can ask without feeling they’ll be trapped.
  • Invests heart, mind, and soul into the endeavor, so that others will feel safe to do the same.

As you can see, showing up is sticky. When an authentic someone listens, values, and responds, the result for most of us humans is irresistible. We are attracted to people who recognize us as people worth knowing.

Wow, Liz, I feel honored that I know you and that though you’re up at the top, you stop to listen to all! That is what I value most about the wonderful work you do!

    Robyn,
The Internet has no top, just you and me in the comment box talking. Yeah. You’re always welcome. I’m always grateful you came. :)

I have to say, you’re right on point with this list, Liz.

Months ago, I met a couple of women writers at a weekend workshop. We talked briefly about some challenges they were each facing. I tossed out some ideas for them to consider, and thought nothing more of it. It was a weekend full of creative workshops, I was in touch with my muse, I was generous with ideas and tips, my guard was down, and the polish on my presentation wasn’t as shiny as it would have been in a more prepared exchange. I was…simply stated…just being me.

Recently, one of those women contacted me out of the blue, asking to hire me for a few hours of one-on-one coaching. She also wanted to know if I’d do an informal presentation to her writing group (for free) and pass out my business card to attendees interested in their own one-on-one sessions.

It’s a remarkable validation of what you do and what you can offer when you see people responding to you just being you.

    Hi Whitney!
I just had a conversation about this today. It was about how when we’re fully expressed in what we’re talking about our natural talent comes shining through. We move out of “self-promotion” into just talking about what we do. That’s a powerful thing.

    I’m thrilled for you! :)

    Hi Liz!

I always speak straight from my heart. I like people also to talk like that. If I find one I’ll forget about time and be fully immersed with the discussion. I like this incident Whitney shares here. I always look for a new person to know about, each day.
    Thanks
    Solomon

    Hi Solomon!
Ah, nothing is more fun to me than losing all sense of time and sense of self. I agree Whitney’s story is fabulous. A new person each day is wonderful goal . . . I have a similar goal myself. :)
