Personal Integrity: Knowing Your Limits

View Comments

PERFECT VIRTUAL MANAGER

Sometimes leadership is about showing up and pushing through the wall.

Sometimes it’s not.

Pushing past our limits can feel heroic when it’s foolish at best . . . and risking catastrophe.

What we can miss is that lack of rest

  • alters our perspective.
  • stresses our immune system.
  • dulls our wits.
  • drains our sense of humor.
  • sends a message that we have unrealistic expectations of ourselves (and our team.)
  • jeopardizes our credibility.

The first time you hear someone say, “Slow down. You need a vacation.” Think about it seriously. The second time, hear it as the red flag that it is.

One day of rest can recharge our batteries. In the long run, it will be time and relationships saved.

Definitely take notice of those signs! If you ignore the red flag warning twice you risk a burn-out! And where are you then?

6 months on none-active rest, trying to figure out what has hit you.

The warning that made the biggest impact to me was being told (over and over again) I lost my sense of humour, I’d become grumpy and not nice to work with anymore.
Still I ignored it, until something said: till here and no further. (That something was my immune system indeed).

Not an experience I wish on anyone, so take head and listen to the signs!

    Yep. Karin!
I don’t what it is that, on the one hand, makes us feel like we’re not as good as the next guy but, on the other, make us think we have “super-human” stamina and staying power to make up for it.

I’ve been pulled as thin as a wire. I wasn’t very nice. It made me forget that the people I worked with were people not obstacles in the way of what I was trying to get done. I don’t ever want to be there again.

    Me neither!

(In the end – after those 6 months – I’d learned a lot again, specially what not to keep doing ;-) )

Yeah, sometimes meeting our evil twin is enough to know what not to do again. :)

    LOL

(I like that comparison, evil twin. Good thing I don’t have a real one – twin that is – ;-) )

Yeah, though I wouldn’t mind an exorcism — just to be sure. :)
