Personal Integrity: Leadership Is Best when the World’s Bad
Sail along smoothly as a calm and charismatic leader . . . until the chips get down, then lose it all and fall apart. What happened there?
When a calm leader is only calm when it’s easy, the problem might be one of image. Image is all about “me.” How will I look to those who are looking at me?
Leadership isn’t about the leader. Problems aren’t about me either.
It doesn’t matter whether I whine and shake, or yell and stammer. If I lose sight of my humanity, my sense of humor and my ability to lead is lost right with them.
A leader is most useful when things are not going well. That’s when self-less leadership is most important. If I crack under pressure, I break a promise when it counts most.
Anyone can lead when the world is good. Leaders lead when the world is bad, and the alligators are climibing the waterfall.
Leaderhip is a commitment to show up when it’s hard to be there.
