When Undesirable Links Happen — Ignore Them
View CommentsOnce a blog begins to get noticed, customers and other bloggers will start linking to it to show their appreciation of quality content. Unfortunately, on occasion, certain undesirables will link for the purpose of quick ad revenues.
In checking the links for my writing blog, Letting me be . . . random wandering and philosophy I have found backlinks on pages that are
- a collection of sites with the word wondering in the title
- a collection of sites with the word letting in the title
- a page advertising a pet store, and one about bears — don’t ask. I have no idea why!
- a spam blog (splog) covered with links that had mine next to an explicit link for an adult-rated site
I didn’t put my content there. I did worry about the first few, but that last link was bothersome. In search engine listings it sometimes came up with the name of my blog next to that explicit text, making it appear as if my blog had explicit adult content. Luckily it was a Blogspot blog — I was able to use the Blogspot flagging process for its removal.
If you find yourself with backlinks that aren’t really blogs, it’s usually best to ignore them. Be sure not to return the favor by linking back to them. Search engines know you can’t control who links to you.
Ignore them. They usually don’t stay up long anyway.
