Enterprise or Hosted Software?

View Comments

Blogging technology is available in two forms — enterprise software and hosted software.

Enterprise Software

Enterprise software, Movable Type and WordPress.org, offer highly fleixble content management systems that becomes part of an organization’s server structure. The considerations of enterprise software include

  • Building an enterprise system can be a barrier to blogging.
  • An enterprise system requires in-house technical support.
  • An enterprise system is protected by the organizational firewall.
  • An enterprise system provides unlimited potential for the future, regarding expansion into internal blogs and wikis, and podcasting etc.
  • An enterprise system keeps control of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) within the enterprise.

Enterprise software is a great solution for a mid-size to large corporation. Large corporations, such as McDonalds, have used it to replace their intranet.

Hosted Software

Hosted software, Typepad, SquareSpace, and WordPress.com, are alternative choice for small businesses and individuals who need hosted services. The consideration are

  • A hosted service sets up the software or the blogger hires a consultant who handles that as part of a design and set-up package.
  • A hosted service comes with technical support that varies by vendor.
  • A hosted service is more likely to be targeted by system outages, slowdowns, and Denial of Service attacks by hackers, .
  • A hosted service provides limits potential for the future, and always has a possibility that the host might no longer be there, might change ownership, or not offer services you find an organization later requires.
  • A hosted service can affect SEO (Search Engine Optimization) by forcing a blog URL to be a subdomain..

Now that WordPress is available as a standalone product, I recommend that small business and individuals buy their own URL and host it indepedently. I did not mention Blogger because of reliability, splogs, and the subdomain issue.

Investigating and making a strong choice from the start is worth the effort. Moving later disrupts traffic and drops all important links to other blogs.

As with anything, time spent planning yields a stronger, more efficient result.
