PBS has a new blog. They’re calling it, Learning Now — at the crossroads of internet culture and education, hosted by Andy Carvin. The first post, Welcome to learning now — Enjoy It While You Can, opens with the most interesting statement.
Hi everyone! Welcome to my new PBS blog, learning.now. I hope you enjoy reading it, because this may be the one and only time you’ll ever have access to it.
Why the skepticism?
Andy’s concern is that Internet filters schools are using to protect children from inappropriate content may also be blocking teachers from relevant professional websites. He likens it to the M. Night Shyamalan movie The Village in which parents have convinced children of monsters lurking in the village so that the children will never leave.
He discusses the MySpace situation that has exacerbated the need, but perhaps it has censored learning too finely.
64 educators commented. Some at great length.
And as you know, with blogging the conversation only starts when the post is published. Half the story is in the comments.
